An Intro into Aerial Yoga

I recently had a promotion for anyone to try aerial yoga for free at Bodyplex in Grayson. If you missed that, you can always come try it without a membership for $20 per class or with a membership for $15. Bodyplex also sells multiclass passes at a discount if you discover you enjoy it as much as I do! Every Bodyplex member get 1 free aerial yoga class.

After every aerial class, I get people who ask about what we are doing. The biggest reason people cite for deciding not to try aerial is fear. It’s usually some variation of “Oh, I’m too old for that!” or “No, I don’t think I could do that!” or “I will fall out.” It can seem unnatural to hang upside down or swing from the rafters. As a teacher trained to guide you through the experience, I can assure you of this: if you follow the instructions and don’t let go*, the hammock will hold you. Of course, if you don’t understand the instructions or if you have any questions, I’m happy to pause and talk you through it or demo it for you. Also, if there is a pose you still don’t feel comfortable with, I give many alternatives so that all levels from ‘this is my first time on a hammock’ to ‘I mastered this years ago’ can participate and have fun. If you’re still afraid, come talk to me.

So what is it and why would you want to try it? I look at aerial yoga as yoga with a prop. The hammock assists so that we can deepen our poses and stretches. Personally, aerial yoga has opened my chest and hips more. When I go to a mat yoga class, I naturally go further than I could without aerial yoga. Some of my students say they are stronger and their balance has improved.

Aerial yoga provides so many benefits, and the hammock lends itself to so many possibilities. The hammock can be used in similar ways to TRX and inversion tables. You can use it to stretch, strengthen, relax, and invert. I am going to start posting breakdowns of aerial poses so you can incorporate those into your practice. If you want your own hammock or need a new one, please contact me for more information or go to https://upliftactive.com/ and use code HUMBLEWARRIOR to get 10% off Silks Sets, Hammock Sets, and Swings.

If you have more questions, reach out to me today. Look under the contact tab at the top of my website. I look forward to seeing you soon and hearing about your flying experiences.

*Full disclosure: I have fallen out of a hammock. I was experimenting with a transition, and I let go of the hammock. One time I hit concrete head first. It hurt. Lesson learned: Don’t let go of the hammock, and it’s best to have guidance when experimenting so you have someone to remind you not to do something crazy. Also, to put your mind at ease, I (a train aerial yoga instructor) will not to tell you to do anything "experimental" in our classes.
